About the Course
Course Description
​
The Boatmaster Grade 2 course is designed to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to act as Master and/or Engineer of vessels less than 12 meters in length, powered by engines up to 350 kW. This comprehensive training program covers a wide range of topics, enabling graduates to safely operate within ports, internal, and territorial waters of Malta.
Requirements:

Minimum Age: 18 years

Vessel Length & Power: Dual qualification for vessels less than 12 meters in length and with engines up to 350 kW.

Operating Limits: Within ports, internal, and territorial waters of Malta.

Prerequisite Qualifying Service:

Applicant must have at least 12 months of appropriate service.

Be in possession of a General Purpose Hand Certificate.

Minimum Training Required: Completion of an approved training course, followed by an Oral and Practical examination covering the following areas:
1. Nautical Knowledge:
-
Maneuvering vessels in various weather conditions.
-
Nautical terms.
-
Handling emergency situations ensuring safety.
-
Safety equipment and survey requirements.
-
Assessing weather conditions for safe operation.
-
International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
-
IALA Region A Buoyage system.
-
Local regulations affecting small craft operation.
-
Structural components of small vessels.
-
Rope maintenance, including splicing and knots.
-
Compass use and bearing taking.
-
Basic navigation techniques for local waters.
-
Chart symbols and abbreviations.
-
Knowledge of Maltese Islands' coasts, depths, hazards, and restricted areas.

Distress signals.
-
Prevention of marine pollution.

2. Writing Skills:
-
Effective writing strategies for work-related documents.
​
3. Occupational Health & Safety:
-
Recognition of fire hazards.
-
Use of lifesaving appliances.
-
Application of OH&S principles on small commercial vessels.
​
4. Engineering:
-
Operation of inboard and outboard marine propulsion engines.
-
Low voltage DC electrical systems operation and maintenance.
-
Auxiliary equipment operation and maintenance.
-
Fire and explosion prevention during equipment operation.
5. Communication:
-
Operation of VHF marine radio equipment for routine and emergency traffic.
-
User maintenance and fault-finding for radio equipment and power supply.
-
Operation of EPIRB and SART.

Additional Requirements: In addition to the above, applicants must possess:

A relevant marine radio operator certificate for the vessel's radio equipment.

A current approved First Aid Certificate.
-
An approved Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting certificate.
